Yes it is. Santa Fe Community School is fully accredited by the National Association for the Legal Support of Alternative Schools (NALSAS). Since 1974, Santa Fe Community School has been a bona fide, voting member of the National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools (NCACS). In 1974, the school achieved its initial accreditation with the NALSAS, the accreditation arm of the NCACS. SFCS is re-accredited on an annual basis. As the coordinator of the NALSAS explains.
"NCACS works in conjunction with the National Association for the Legal Support of Alternative Schools, the accrediting agency for bona fide Voting Members of the Coalition.
NALSAS applies only one standard to its accredited members: Consumer protection. Our accreditation assure the public at large that at least one member of the NCACS not involved with the control, operation, or proceeds of the applicant program has reviewed and confirmed that the program's claims and conditions regarding its location, existence and operations. NALSAS validates that the program is what it purports to be.
Whether such a program is desirable or suitable for meeting the needs of a particular learner then becomes a question for the consumer to determine."
- (Ed Nagel, NALSAS Coordinator.)
Since 1976, the NALSAS, headed by its CEO/Coordinator, Mr. Ed Nagel, has been a recognized leader in the arena of non-public education. This organization's efforts made possible the home-schooling movement in the United States.
Is SFCS accredited by the federal governent?
No. And this is a great source of misunderstanding. The
federal government has not established an official
accreditation program for private schools.
Like every other private institution, the Santa Fe Community School
is accredited by a private accrediting agency.
The Santa Fe Community School functions in full compliance with all statutes
and regulations pertaining to the operation of non-public elementary and
secondary schools in the State of New Mexico. As required by law,
Santa Fe Community School is listed with the
State of New Mexico's Department of Education as a private, non-religious
elementary and seconday school. Our official school number is 71493040.
When can I enroll? When does the school year start?
SFCS accepts enrollments any time of the year.
Our school year begins on July 1st of every year, and ends the following June 30th.
This does not mean that you have to hold school year round; this means that you have the flexibility to do school when you choose
within the school year, as long as you complete a minimum of 180 days school time.
Can I make payments? Do you take credit cards? Is my enrollment fee refundable?
Yes, you may make payments of paying the full tuition at one time is a burden to you. Our policy is that all tuition balance is paid in full by the end of each
school year. Just call our office and we will make reasonable arrangements with you.
Yes, we take credit cards, but only through PayPal.
No, your tuition is
not refunadable.
Does SFCS supply my curriculum?
No. SFCS is not a "correspondence school." We ourselves do not design,
issue, or distribute "canned", pre-packaged educational "courses" in various
"subject areas" or "grade levels". We do try to assist people in developing /
selecting their own educational program for the child(ren) involved.
What does the enrollment fee cover? Do you offer scholarships?
The enrollment fee covers your enrollment in a private school. SFCS creates and maintains files for each child that you enroll.
At the end of each school year, based upon records that you submit to us, your child(ren) who are in primary school will be placed in the
next grade upon your re-enrollment with us. High school students will receive high school credit, will be placed in
the next grade, and we maintain high school transcripts. Should you choose to not re-enroll, we will send your child's(ren's)
record to whichever program you tell us to.
Yes, we offer scholarships to previously enrolled students. The scholarship amount is based upon family income.
Regarding the Child Care Facility form, do I need to take my children to a medical doctor for an exam?
No, but we do need your child's immunization record. Or, you may provide a signed copy of whatever form your state
provides for exemption, or religious exemption.
How do I get my child's school records from his / her previously attended school?
You don't, we do. Please sign and return the Record's Release form. When we receive your signed form, our representative
will sign it, seal it, and mail it to the previous school. The previous school will then submit to us your child's(ren's)
school records.
How do you keep my child's(ren's) records? When are the quartely reporting dates? When are the quarterly reports due?
You keep records by recording the date, description of activity, and then time spent on that activity, daily, on simple
spread sheet forms. Or you may use our Excel workbook for recording. Please contact our office if you are interested in this.
You submit your filled-in course reports four times per year, on pre-set quarterly reporting dates.
The quarterly reporting dates are:July 1 - September 30: October 1 - December 31: January 1 - March 31: April 1 - June 30.
The quarterly reports are due on October 15, January 15, April 15, and July 15.
