METHODS OF HOMESCHOOLING

Contained in the following descriptions are brief explanations of a few methods used in homeschooling today. These are but a few of the methods "out there". If you are already using something different, please email a brief description and information about your method to METHODS and we may add it to this page.

Unschooling
Each Child pursues his / her own interests. Parents provide resources for the child to learn on his / her own and access the real world. This is actually the method that has been used by teachers at the Santa Fe Community School, and we highly recommend this method to parents for use in our Home Study Program , as described by SFCS principal, Ed Nagel, in his secular book, CHEEZ!

  • Homeschooling Reflections by Connie Colten
This book is a book about some of the experiences Connie had while un/homeschooling her five children (now ages 15-32) beginning 1981. Connie's oldest two sons attended school through the fourth grade and kindergarten. After that none of the kids went to school until college. Connie's oldest son now works as an accountant, the next one just graduated with a degree in theatre. Another son works as a journeyman in the heating/AC field, and Connie's daughter attends community college majoring in dance and music, while the youngest still learns at home.
  • School Free by Wendy Priesnitz
This is Canada's best-selling homeschooling how-to guide, written by the founder and editor of Life Learning Magazine. It covers how not to use curriculum, dealing with objections and school authorities, socialization, the role of computers, how teens can learn on their own, learning versus teaching, deschooling a child, child-directed learning & more.

  • The Unschooling Handbook by Mary Griffith
The unscooling movement is founded on the principle that children learn best when they pursue their own natural curiosities and interests. Without bells, schedules, and rules about what to do and when, the knowledge they gain from mindful living and exploration is absorbed more easily and enthusiastically. Learning is a natural, inborn impulse, and the world is rich with lessons to be learned and puzzles to be solved.

  • 48 good reasons not to go to school created by 18-year-old unschooler, Heidi Priesnitz
A delightful little children's book (that can most certainly be enjoyed by adults as well!). This book looks at home-based learning with a child-like appreciation for the things that are important in life, using simple illustrations and succinct comments about what deschooled children do all day.

  • Growing Without Schooling John Holt's website
John Holt was a key figure in the free school movement during the 1960s and 1970s. He is a writer who encouraged many to launch and sustain alternative schools during those turbulent years.

  • Homeschooling Our Children Unschooling Ourselves by Alison McKee
A real nuts and bolts book about unschooling. A compelling story about one family's journey into the unknown territory of homeschooling. McKee offers the reader insights on how children learn, plenty of illustrations and practical advice about how "unschooling" works. This book will reassure parents considering homeschooling that nurturing children's natural desire to learn can empower their children to become enthusiastic life-long learners.
